A south Texas rancher for seventeen years now, I feel I'm making a worthwhile contribution to our community--grass fed beef is healthy for people, great for cows and good for our environment. Before becoming a rancher I lived and worked in various African countries for many years where I learned to value clean water, sufficient locally produced fresh food, and a natural rural environment. Africa was in many ways similar to south Texas. With lots of hard work and some luck, ranching is a very satisfying lifestyle.
I absolutely believe that good nutrition is essential to good health. I have a background in education, nutrition and public health and I love good food. I enjoy ranching because I’m constantly learning about the social behavior of the herd and the individual personality traits of each animal. Cattle are remarkably cooperative and supportive of one another, in ways that benefit the whole herd. The cows have impressive mothering skills.
By selling my beef at the Pearl Farmers Market in San Antonio my animals remain on the ranch among their herd, living a good life, from the day they are born until the day they become beef. They will never have to experience long travel in a crowded truck or being in a feed-yard.
The Pearl Farmers Market in San Antonio provides ready access to fresh, delicious, and healthy produce for San Antonians in an old market setting. More and more people are seeking out locally produced, sustainable agricultural products that are better and healthier for them and for the environment.
